Interview—Anthony Zara, Advanced Space Astrodynamics and Satellite Navigation Engineer

What is the most interesting part of your current project?

I would be hard-pressed to say anything other than the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System (CAPS) since that has been where I have focused the majority of my time and effort at Advanced Space. This technology has the opportunity to revolutionize how navigation at the Moon and beyond works for the future of space exploration by reducing navigation and communication burdens on Earth ground stations with its decentralized and cooperative approach. Developing a totally novel technology is always an interesting project; the fact that we currently have CAPSTONE up there at the Moon gathering real data in support of this technology makes it an engineer’s dream. U.S. satellite persists as lunar pathfinder to mitigate risk for future space programs.

Westminster, CO – Advanced Space LLC., a leading space tech solutions company, announced that CAPSTONE™ – the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment – continues to be “The Little Satellite That Could” as it flies near the Moon over 430 days. The spacecraft is conducting operations in Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO); achieving record-long mission operational “up times;” conducting experiments that demonstrate its usefulness for position, navigation, and timing (PNT); and for testing software at the Moon. What is the most interesting part of your current project?

It’s a Space Situational Awareness (SSA) project to observe activity around the Moon and in the Earth-Moon corridor, which is a really hot topic for government and commercial entities these days. It’s also interesting to interact with so many partners: we have a subcontract for a [spacecraft] bus provider; another for the bus propulsion system; we’re purchasing the communications system; our bus sub has a sub for the imaging payload while we’re providing our unique expertise on cislunar navigation, ops, systems, and comms; and all of this has to come together to accomplish the mission. Not to mention it’s super cool to be the prime and work directly with the customer on this contract! (more…)

Reflections on the First U.S. Space Force Association Spacepower Conference

Taking the Space Force Seriously

In December, Bradley Cheetham, CEO, Dave Jungkind, Chief Revenue Officer & Special Program Lead, and Bart Leahy, Senior Technical Writer, attended Spacepower. Dave Jungkind shares his perspective on Space Force in the industry. The United States Space Force (USSF) came into being December 20, 2019. Happy belated birthday to our newest service and Semper supra! This past month, The US Space Force Association (SFA), the industry and volunteer community of the Space Force, put together their first conference in Orlando: Spacepower. It was an engaging gathering and Advanced Space was honored to sponsor and attend the conference. (more…)
